Huge fire in Hamburg: fire department warns of smoke cloud

Two warehouses have been on fire in Hamburg since Sunday morning. The fire brigade warned of the danger of smoke gases and airborne chemicals in the fire in the Rothenburgsort district. In the morning, the clouds of smoke moved towards the city center due to the current northeast winds.

“The city center of Hamburg is completely dark,” said a spokesman for the Hamburg fire department. Rothenburgsort is located east of the city center on the Elbe and borders, among other things, Hafencity.

The fire brigade was initially unable to say exactly how the big fire could have happened on Easter night or what exactly was in the burning warehouses. On official alert, the fire and smoke formation were classified as “extreme danger”. In a large area in northeast Hamburg, residents were urged to keep windows and doors closed and protect themselves from smoke.

Deutsche Bahn announced that the tracks between Hamburg and Büchen were closed due to the fire. Local traffic was also stopped by the Fire Department. Extinction work continued.
