Humanity is sick – Le Journal de Montréal

War, murder, violence, hatred, etc. This is what shapes our newscasts.

We are in a strange time for humanity. We thrive on hate, blame and accusations. We are in a time of distrust and contempt. We are divided, polarized and torn.

We are in a time where we have to quickly choose a side. Right now and now. Are you for or against unisex toilets? For or against Israel? For or against Trump? For or against immigration? For or against secularism? For or against the third link? The tram?

Humanity has abolished gray. We can no longer qualify our position. We can no longer call for appeasement. To be nuanced is to be weak. Staying in the dark means not having the courage to stand by your beliefs. To say that the situation is more complex than its conclusion is to be blunt.

We no longer even try to get a big picture view of an issue before making a decision, and are more likely to side with one side than another. We are so afraid of not having an opinion, of having beliefs, that we quickly choose a side, even if we don’t even know why.

Could it be that we are all wrong? Let’s all be on the field? That we lack peace and perspective? That we don’t have to kill each other? That with a little understanding we can live together happily?

I think of the young people who celebrated in Israel. They did not choose between life and death. They did not choose between Israel and Palestine. They did not choose between peace and war. They were happy and alive before monsters chose them. Can we take a deep breath and develop the de-escalation reflex? We would be doing our children a disservice.
