One final push and the four Humvees stop. The cloud of sand kicked up by the powerful four-wheel drive vehicle is then swept away by the offshore wind and the veil is lifted on a landscape of absolute destruction. This Wednesday morning, an Israeli army convoy led a handful of journalists from the international press into the center of Gaza City. The coastal road they just parked on is unrecognizable. In the past, it was the pride of Gazans with its seaside restaurants, its small coffee kiosks, its residential towers and its brand new mosques and its gyms. Gazans bathed there, fished there, and galloped there on dashing Arabian horses.
There they forgot for a moment the hardship of a life without freedom and a future.
