Despite the ban on events, activists in Istanbul have protested against discrimination against transgender people. However, the police prevented the “Trans Pride Parade” participants from demonstrating as planned in central Taksim Square today with large-scale roadblocks.

Metro connections were also disrupted. Activist association Kaos GL reported police “attacks” on demonstrators.
The governor of Istanbul, Davut Gül, had already announced in a tweet on Friday that he would not allow any event “that would endanger our institution of the family (…)”. Demonstrations and other Pride month-related events were also banned in other Turkish cities. The Turkish government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly expressed strong LGBTQ hostility.
