Jason Ritters didn’t believe he “deserved” his now-wife Melanie Lynskey early in their relationship due to his battle with alcoholism.

The 43-year-old revealed on Wednesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show that while he knew how “amazing” Lynskey “early one” was, it took him a while to realize that she was “The One.” was.

“It’s not as sweet a story as you’d like to think,” said the Parenting graduate. “It was messy and interesting and weird. But mixed up [with] The mix was that I was dealing with some alcohol issues.

“At one point I knew how amazing she was and I thought she was amazing for someone who deserved her, basically,” Ritters continued while holding back tears. “And I didn’t feel like that person. I was feeling a little too crazy.”

Jason Ritters spoke candidly about how his alcoholism affected the early days of his relationship with Melanie Lynskey.

The actor quit drinking the same year he met the Yellowjackets actress, but he waited to make sure it lasted before he got too serious with her.

“It wasn’t until after I hadn’t had a drink for maybe a year that I started to be like, ‘Oh, maybe I can promise someone else some things. Maybe I can be that person,’” he said, blinking back tears.

“I knew she was incredible. It’s worked on me enough to feel like maybe I could be the one for her too.”

The confession prompted Drew Barrymore to speak openly about her own struggles with alcohol.

Lynskey, who also got emotional, noted that her husband “worked so hard” before shaking his hand to tell him how proud she was.

The emotional story surprised Barrymore, 48, and prompted her to open up about her own struggles with alcohol.

“I haven’t had a drink in almost four years,” said the 50 First Dates star, noting that alcohol is her “poison.”

Ritter’s story resonated with Barrymore, who says she often feels the same way when it comes to dating.

“The narrative you create is, ‘I can’t be with anyone.’ And I haven’t been in a relationship since I stopped drinking, and I’m really looking forward to one day not having that bad girl narrative, the instability, the ‘I’m not someone who has the right’ ‘to be with someone for their own sake’ [feeling].”

Ritters and Lynskey, 45, tied the knot in 2020 and welcomed their first child a year earlier.

Since then, the pair have become the internet’s “couple targets,” with Ritter most recently shutting down trolls for shaming his bride.

After the actress called out critics to comment on her weight, Ritter urged the haters to “take a dip in the sun.”

“If anyone has any other unsolicited comments about *everyone* else’s body, feel free to write them on their own forehead in permanent ink and dip them directly into the sun,” Ritter tweeted last year.
