Jays destroy the Tigers, overtake the Yankees

The Toronto Blue Jays capitalized on the great performances of George Springer and Whit Merrifield to defeat the Tigers 12-2 in Detroit on Friday night.

That moves the Jays up to third place in the hard-fought American League East Division and uses the Yankees’ loss to the Chicago Cubs to edge ahead of the New Yorkers. It’s the fourth straight win for Toronto.

Springer hit a long ball in the fourth inning and finished the game with three RBIs. Merrifield also hit a home run in the ninth inning in a four RBI game.

Alek Manoah (2-7) clinched the win for the Jays, only his second of the season after going five innings and conceding just five hits and one run. He also had eight strikeouts.

The loss went to Alex Faedo (1-4), who was knocked out of the game after just three sets and two thirds. The right-hander gave the Jays six hits and seven runs.

The Jays and Tigers will play again in Game 2 of this three-game series on Saturday. The meeting will also be broadcast on TVA Sports from 1pm.
