Joe Biden once again raises his voice against his Russian counterpart three weeks after the invasion of Ukraine began. The President of the United States called Vladimir Putin a “bloody dictator” and a “pure thug” on Thursday, March 17, during the Friends of Ireland Dinner hosted by Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in Washington.

For the first time, an American leader called a Russian president a “war criminal”, thank you, in response to a journalist’s question. “The president spoke from the bottom of his heart and from what you saw on TV, which is the barbaric actions of a brutal dictator,” his spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, later said. She clarified that “the judicial procedure [était] in the State Department” regarding the legal qualification of “war crimes” committed by Russia in Ukraine.

So far, no US official has publicly used the terms “war criminal” or “war crimes”, unlike other states or international organizations. “We consider such rhetoric unacceptable and unforgivable on the part of the head of state, whose bombs have claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people around the world,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday, TASS and RIA Novosti reported.
