On June 30th, Ed Sheeran brought his current tour to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Ahead of the show, the British singer-songwriter announced a line-up shift after special guest Khalid was forced to take a break from touring after he was involved in a car accident days before his scheduled performance in Bay State. As a result, John Mayer took over the role of the R&B/Soul singer who was present during the concert.
Mayer performed with a full band during the evening’s performance of the Sheeran original “Think Out Loud.” The song originally appeared on the artist’s second studio album titled x. It also became one of Sheeran’s biggest hits in the US at the time of its release, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 until being supplanted by another original, “Shape of You.”
Prior to Friday’s collaboration, Mayer and Sheeran had performed “Think Out Load” on previous occasions, including an April 10, 2019 stop in Tokyo. Taking to the stage again last night, the pair plunged into the arrangement, with Mayer playing a supporting role on guitar, adding riffs, emphasizing the original format and injecting lyrics during the chorus.
Mayer will return tonight for Dead & Company’s Final Tour. The band is slated to begin performing in Boulder, Colorado at Folsom Field and attend shows scheduled for July 1-3 before returning to The Gorge on July 7th.
