The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, Joseph Borrellasserts that Russia has been committing “many war crimes” in Ukraine since the invasion began on February 24. He has referred in particular to the situation in the city of Mariupol, which is besieged by Russian troops, calling it a “massive war crime”.
“Russia really commits a lot of war crimes, that’s the word, we have to say it. What is happening in Mariúpol is a massive war crime that is destroying everything, bombing and killing everyone, indiscriminately,” Borrell told reporters upon arrival at an EU foreign ministers’ council.

Borrell also reiterated that the European Union (EU) will support Ukraine with all its resources and is considering new sanctions against Russia “especially in the energy sector”.

Captured in Mariupol
Almost half a million people are locked up in Mariúpol, a Ukrainian city that has been under siege by Russian troops since late February. In Mariúpol there is no electricity, no water and no heatingaccording to local sources.
ProRussian separatists in eastern Ukraine said the takeover of the port city of Mariupol was “not a matter of two or three days, or even a week.”
Ukraine also rejects the Russian ultimatum to surrender and lay down arms in the city. From the capital Kyiv, they described the proposal as “delirium”.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said that Mariuopol’s resistance, which has been heavily bombed by the Russians for days, is “saving” other cities like Dnipro, Kyiv and Odessa from intensifying an offensive against them.
