Sands went missing in January after hiking in the Baldy Bowl area of Southern California.

The disappearance of the 65-year-old triggered an extensive search.

Hikers found his remains on June 24. The cause of death is still under investigation.

In the interview, Sands described climbing as “consolation and a kind of existentialist self-negation, but also as self-affirmation”.

“If you can deal with dangerous mountains, then as an actor you can certainly deal with life – the two complement each other quite well,” the actor claimed.

Sands said friends he “used to climb with have stopped going to the mountains, partly because they realize that climate change has made the rock faces much more unstable, partly because it’s time.”

A lack of commitment to the route is dangerous, he warned, saying the “confrontation with human remains” could be “terrifying”.
