BREAKING NEWS: Karim Benzema announces he is retiring from international football and admits he ‘made mistakes’ after being sent home from the World Cup to spit with boss Didier Deschamps

Karim Benzema has announced his retirement from international football after missing out on France’s place in the World Cup final.

Benzema was sent home from injury on the eve of the tournament but there was some speculation he could return to the final after a friendly for Real Madrid.

However, he reportedly turned down the opportunity to return to Qatar after falling out with manager Didier Deschamps and has now confirmed on social media that he has decided to end his international career.

“I’ve made the effort and mistakes to get where I am today and I’m proud of it! I have written my story and ours is coming to an end,” Benzema wrote on Twitter Monday afternoon.

Benzema’s shock announcement comes less than 24 hours after France’s defeat by Argentina when Deschamps’ side were rejected in their bid to win two World Cups.

Deschamps plans to hold talks with the French Football Federation over his future in the new year but Benzema has chosen not to wait and see how those talks develop and left the national team.
