Despite threats of sanctions from the West, Russia maintains its planned deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. “It is clear that such a reaction cannot influence Russia’s plans,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today of possible punitive measures.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has previously called on Belarus to give up nuclear weapons and has threatened sanctions in response. He criticized Russian plans as “irresponsible escalation” and a threat to European security.
Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin’s announcement that tactical nuclear weapons would be stationed in dependent partner Belarus provoked mixed reactions in Europe and the United States. While NATO remained calm and would like to continue to monitor the situation, alarm was expressed in Eastern Europe and Ukraine.
