The bull had beautiful brown fur and impressive horns. The scene occurred not in Texas, but on the railroad tracks west of New York, near Newark Airport. As a result, all trains were delayed by at least forty-five minutes in the morning on Thursday, December 14th. New fantasy about the Washington-Boston corridor rail network that she experiences so often.

It's the famous Baltimore Tunnel, a real bottleneck for Amtrak's public transit network, that delays travelers. Built more than 150 years ago over a length of 2.4 kilometers, it is curvy, does not meet modern safety standards and requires a speed limit of 50 km/h. It needs to be replaced by a new tunnel that will cost $6 billion (5.5 billion euros) and is scheduled to open in 2035. If everything goes right.

Likewise, 28 new TGV Avelia Liberty Shuttles, manufactured by Alstom, were scheduled to be delivered in early 2022, but due to issues with inadequate overhead lines and standards, they will not enter service until 2024. And in any case, the Washington-New York-Boston connection is not designed for high speeds. As a result, trains will never travel faster than 260 km/h, which is below the 300 km/h threshold considered high speed. So when the topic of “TGV made in the USA” comes up, Americans inevitably have a smile on their faces.

The oppressive heat of the desert

However, the tide could be turning, although one should be cautious for now given the number of high-speed train cancellations in the United States. For example, President Joe Biden — known for regularly taking the train between Delaware, where he was elected, and Washington, DC, during his time as a legislator — just announced $8.2 billion in public funding for high-speed rail projects. He traveled to Las Vegas on December 9 to announce $3 billion in federal aid for the most advanced project, the 350-kilometer high-speed rail (LGV) between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

“Trying to make the drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas is really painful. This can take up to seven hours. But soon this will no longer be the case. “We're investing $3 billion in this rail line so people can make this trip in just over two hours,” Joe Biden said. In fact, Interstate 15, the highway that leads to Vegas, where millions of Californians go to drink, is often clogged under the oppressive heat of the Mojave Desert.
