Latitude#53: Milei and the Argentine Sovereignty of the Falkland Islands Crusoe

The sovereignty of the Falkland Islands became an issue in Argentina’s presidential election campaign, which ended with the victory of libertarian Javier Milei. The defeated Peronist candidate Sergio Massa recalled in the debate that Milei was a supporter of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who led the war against Argentina in 1982 and still bears the scars of the conflict.

With Milei’s victory, the Falklands issue must again take a back seat.

“During the administration of Alberto Fernández, this issue was a widespread theme for the exercise of ideological diplomacy. It didn’t achieve much, but it did awaken nationalist spirits a little. Milei was very critical of this. And his future Chancellor Diana Mondino was also very critical of it. “She said it was necessary to respect the rights of Falkland Islanders,” Professor Marcos Novaro said in the podcast Width.

Novaro is a professor of political theory at the University of Buenos Aires and the author of several books on the Argentine military dictatorship and the government of the Peronist Carlos Menem.

“Many people understand that insisting on sovereignty over the islands will not change much. The situation is stuck. It is also not a major priority in Argentine politics. I think it was another attempt by Massa to put pressure on Milei and portray him as a friend of Thatcher and the English, but that doesn’t play a big role in the matter,” Moraes said.
