Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, grandson of Robert De Niro, dies at 19

Actor Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, grandson of Robert De Niro, has died, his family announced Monday. he was 19

De Niro-Rodriguez’s mother, Drena De Niro, mourned the loss of her son in an Instagram post Monday, calling him “my beautiful sweet angel,” whom she loved “indescribably.”

“You were my joy, my heart and everything that was ever pure and real in my life,” she said. “I wish I was with you now. I wished I was with you. I don’t know how to live without you, but I will try to move on and spread the love and light that you gave me when you came to me.” Be your mom. You were loved and cherished so much and I wish love alone could have saved you.”

In a statement to CBS News, Drena De Niro expressed her gratitude for the “outpouring of love and support” the family has received while working through “this heartbreaking heartache.”

“It is with immeasurable shock and … sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved son Leo,” she said.

De Niro-Rodriguez’s father, artist Carlos Mare, posted a black image on his Instagram pages and responded to his son’s death by responding to De Niro’s post.

“Words are not enough to express the joy he brought us or the loss we now bear with our families and friends,” Mare said. “He is Godschild now. With this full moon, his mind illuminates what could not be seen in the dark. You can’t spell LOVE without LEO.”

Robert De Niro said in a statement to CBS News that he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of “my beloved grandson Leo.”

“We really appreciate everyone’s condolences. We ask that we be given privacy so that we can grieve the loss of Leo,” De Niro said.

When asked about De Niro-Rodriguez’s death, a New York City Police Department spokesman told CBS News that police went to a lower Manhattan building Sunday afternoon in response to an 911 call. According to a statement to CBS News, a man was found unconscious and unresponsive and was pronounced dead by emergency services. The police spokesman said the man was 18, but a family spokesman confirmed to CBS News that De Niro-Rodriguez was 19.

The city’s chief medical officer’s office will determine the cause of death, the police spokesman said.

De Niro-Rodriguez and his mother appeared in the 2018 films A Star Is Born and Cabaret Maxime. He was also credited with an appearance on 2005’s The Collection.
