London police officer charged with murder: His colleagues give up carrying their guns

A year ago, the accused police officer fatally shot a young black man.

Around 100 London police officers have given up carrying their weapons after one of their colleagues was charged with murder. The police officer in question is accused of killing a 24-year-old black man, named Chris Kaba, reports Le Figaro. He was presented in court this Thursday, September 21st.

The events took place a year ago when the victim received a bullet that penetrated the windshield of his car. According to reports, the vehicle the young man was driving had been involved in a firearms incident several days earlier. Chris Kaba ultimately died in the hospital. The police officer was suspended and placed under judicial supervision.

For his part, Scotland Yard’s spokesman said he was “concerned about the potential consequences of these prosecutions”, despite the fact that a large proportion of the 34,000 police officers in the capital are not armed. According to BBC, Almost 100 police officers therefore refrained from carrying their weapons “Time to think about your position.” Interior Minister Suella Braverman also supported law enforcement, saying they “have to make split-second decisions under extraordinary pressure.”

We depend on our brave firearms officers to protect us from the most dangerous and violent in society. In the interest of public safety, they must make split-second decisions under extraordinary pressure. 1/3https://t.co/kYQlxffXdH

The population’s distrust of the police

For several years, London police have been met with distrust from the public following a series of crimes by police officers, particularly in March 2021 after the rape and murder of a 33-year-old woman.
