Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a letter to Argentine Presidentelect Javier Milei to congratulate him on his victory in Argentina’s elections. Milei posted a post on a social network this Wednesday (22) to thank Xi for the letter.
“I thank President Xi Jinping for the congratulations and good wishes he sent me in his letter. I send him my sincerest wishes for the wellbeing of the Chinese people,” he wrote.
During the election campaign, Milei stated that if elected he would distance himself from governments he considers communist, including China. However, the Chinese are one of Argentina’s most important trading partners.
China’s state media confirmed the sending of Xi’s letter to Milei. In the document shared on social media by the presidentelect, the Chinese president stressed the importance of the partnership between the two countries.
“Both countries always adhere to mutual respect, equal treatment, mutual benefit and common gains, and strongly support each other in matters affecting each other’s vital interests,” the letter said.
Xi also said he is willing to work with Milei to maintain friendship between Argentina and China. “I hope that under your leadership, the government and people of your country will achieve new successes in nationbuilding.”
The new president inherits an Argentina with the highest inflation in 30 years and twofifths of the population living in poverty, on top of a sharp exchange rate devaluation.
