“We also recently passed the milestone of 300 million copies sold, a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we all built our first clay houses,” Minecraft wrote in a post on its Internet website.

For comparison, Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold more than 180 million copies worldwide since its release in 2013, according to Take-Two, the parent company of publisher Rockstar Games.

Minecraft was released in 2011 and was born from the work of one man, the Swede Markus Persson, who, together with some employees, founded Mojang Studios to develop his project.

Enjoying hackers and kids alike, Minecraft is based on exploring an infinite realm where players can collect materials (through mining) and use them to create their virtual cities, stay alive in survival mode, or build whatever they want.

For many, Minecraft functions like a virtual Lego game and thanks to open source code, players accessing it via a computer can create their own personalized game elements, allowing for infinite variations.

In 2014, the success was so great that Markus Persson sold Mojang to the American giant Microsoft for $2.5 billion.
