A man in his 30s killed himself on Friday March 3 by blowing himself up at the entrance to a court in Montenegro. There are five minor injuries.
A record that could have been more dramatic. This Friday, a 39-year-old man died after blowing himself up and injuring five other people at the entrance to a court in the Montenegrin capital Podgorica, police said.
The reasons for his actions are not yet known. “He activated the high-explosive device upon entering the courthouse and was killed instantly. There are also five injured who were taken to hospital. There shouldn’t be any serious injuries,” said Srdjan Korac, chief of the Montenegrin Criminal Investigation Department.
security flaws
Police cordoned off the area near the courthouse shortly after the blast, which happened in the late morning, at the time of a large attendance at the facility, an AFP journalist reported. Damage is not visible outside the building.
The president of this court of first instance, Zeljka Jovicevic, complained to the press about the general lack of security in the Montenegrin courts. “We’ve been reporting the issue for years, we’ve been talking about it for three years (…) It luckily ended that way, but it could have been a lot worse,” she said.
Violent incidents are relatively rare in this small Adriatic country known for its scenic, mountain-fringed beaches that attract many tourists. But last August, the country was rocked by a massacre in the town of Cetinje (centre), in which a maniac killed 10 people, including two children, before he himself was shot dead by a civilian.
