Singer Mary Weiss, lead singer of the girl group The ShangriLas, has died at the age of 75. According to the Deadline portal, the information was confirmed by the artist's husband, but he did not name the cause of death.
The ShangriLas was very successful in the 1960s with sister duos Mary and Betty Weiss and Marge and Mary Ann Ganser. The songs “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” and “Leader of the Pack” were included in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.
Mary Weiss was the group's main vocalist, singing about teenage love and tragedy. The quartet received a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, although they ended their activities in 1968.
She returned to music in 2007 with her first solo album, “Dangerous Game,” but did not have the same success.
Miriam Linna, of the label Norton Records, which released the album, mourned her death in a Facebook post, writing: “Mary was an icon, a hero, both for young men and women of my generation and of all generations.”
