On that occasion, then-US Secretary of State James Baker assured the Soviet leader – without the mediation of any agreement – that the military alliance would advance “not an inch” east and today, 33 years later, the enlargement of NATO is a reality.
For the Nicaraguan analyst Daniel Martínez Chávez, the purpose of the bloc with the admission of its 31st member is “to lay siege to Russia and to deploy advanced weapons on its borders that reduce attack times”.
This, he assured in exclusive statements to Prensa Latina, is part of a historic process of threatening aggression against Moscow and of a political-strategic nature, based on the expansion of coalitions in the event of disputes and possible geopolitical clashes.
In addition, the expert underlined the West’s economic war against the Eurasian nation, its natural resources and means of production, where “the instrumentalization of Ukrainians in the fight for the interests of the United States is part of it.”
NATO CLOSER TO RUSSIA
For the analyst at the Regional Center for International Studies (CREI), based in Managua, the annexation of Finland guarantees another country in the struggle for the bloc’s ideals on a border of about 1,300 kilometers.
“However, its very geography is a disadvantage for this nation, since the distance from the European continental mass increases the need for supplies by sea, and the Russians will now exercise greater vigilance and surveillance of the Baltic Sea,” he said.
In addition, they have to form “joint operational brigades” in the border area, since their proximity makes them the main targets in the event of a Russian attack to destroy NATO infrastructure.
However, “the risk remains that the military alliance could bring its missiles, ships and other weapons even closer directly to the Russian border, and this therefore gives Moscow the legitimacy to attack these positions in the event of an escalation of the conflict.” According to the Nicaraguan According to analyst Lester Pilarte, this represents a military strategy by Washington, in the event of an attack, to divert the Kremlin’s missiles to targets of great economic importance in the region, such as Belgium, Germany, Italy and Türkiye.
“Again, it’s easier to risk someone else’s skin in an extraterritorial war. Also, with this new inclusion, they are showing the world that they have not lost their influence and hegemony,” he told Prensa Latina exclusively.
NEW ACTIONS AGAINST MOSCOW?
Martínez Chávez opined that the NATO countries will follow their same foreign policy line: promoting psychological manipulation operations to justify, as they always claim, “being on the right side of history and the values of democracy”.
At the same time, they will continue their campaign to demonize and discredit Russia, and it is likely that “there will be an increase in hostility over the exit from the Baltic Sea and the deployment of US weapons, radars and anti-aircraft batteries on Finnish territory”.
For its part, the expert added, Moscow will resist through the development of its industry and favorable alliances in the face of the current economic war with record revenues after commercializing the inputs to other countries, which in turn will resell them to Europe.
“They have already taken the first measures based on a temporary suspension of oil, electricity and wood supplies to Finland. We’ll see if NATO will be able to deliver these resources to its new allies,” concluded the expert.
