Created by Donald P. Bellisario, the series began as a spin-off of another famous fiction, JAG, for the CBS version. On the occasion of the series’ 20th anniversary, Mark Horowitz, director of JAG and executive producer of NCIS, recalled in a report by the Hollywood Reporter: “The series is originally presented with a kind of law and order. However, at that time, another famous series that triumphed on the same channel had a very similar name: CSI (in French “Les Experts”). “In that first year, it was understandable that the people at CSI weren’t very happy that we were starting a drama called NCIS, a forensic detective series. So it was decided to differentiate it, at least for this first year, it would be called Navy NCIS. NCIS retained the name Navy NCIS throughout the first season. After this first year of airing, NCIS returned to its original name and has already outpaced CSI by at least six seasons.
