“In our area, 26 people died and many were injured,” said Suresh Sunar, chief of Jajarkot in the far western Himalayan country.

The earthquake struck late Friday evening in Jajarkot district, about 500 kilometers south of Kathmandu, where the tremor was felt.

According to witnesses, the earthquake was felt as far away as New Delhi, India, around 600 kilometers away. Videos posted on social media showed people fleeing on the streets as buildings were evacuated.

According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.2 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.
