Three years later, Netflix finally announced the return of the sci-fi series Russian Matryoshka. The release date for the second season was revealed in a teaser that gave fans a glimpse of what the new episodes have to offer. Created by Natasha Lyonne, Leslie Headland and Amy Poehler, the first season premiered in February 2019.
In the video, Nadia is seen traveling through time and space on a subway ride that looks very trivial. This brings her back to the familiar bathroom door that started it all. “When the universe is fucking with you? Go ahead,” Nadia says before taking a sip of her drink. According to the show’s logline (via The Hollywood Reporter), the second season of Russian Doll will continue to explore existential themes through an often humorous science fiction lens. Finding a fate even worse than endless death, Nadia and Alan will delve into their past through an unexpected time portal in one of Manhattan’s most infamous locations. At first, their experience seems to be an ever-expanding, era-spanning adventure from generation to generation. But they soon realize that this new extraordinary event is more than they bargained for. And together they must find a way out.
The first season of Russian Doll followed game developer Nadya Vulvokova stuck in a Groundhog Day-like existence. She was caught in a time loop as the guest of honor at a seemingly inevitable party in New York. She died repeatedly, always rebooting at the same moment she tried to figure out what was happening to her. This led her to find Alan Zavery, who was experiencing the same thing in another event.
The eight-episode series received four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for its first season, including one for Outstanding Comedy Series and another for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. The second season of Russian Doll promises to up the ante. Four years after Nadia and Alan outsmart their mortal time loop, they embark on a journey through the Manhattan time portal. This chain of events sends them on another adventure that takes over the universe.
Russian Doll stars Natasha Lyonne as Nadia Vulvokova and Charlie Barnett as Alan Zaveri. Featuring a time-looped duo starring Greta Lee as Maxine, Nadya’s friend who throws her 36th birthday party. Yul Vasquez appears as John Reyes, a real estate agent and Nadia’s ex-boyfriend who is in the process of getting a divorce. Elizabeth Ashley plays Ruth Brenner, a therapist and close friend of Nadia’s family and her mother. It stars Brooke Timber as young Nadia and Kate Jennings Grant as young Ruth. Annie Murphy (of Schitt’s Creek fame) will join the cast for the second season.
Natasha Lyonne serves as showrunner and executive producer for the second season of Russian Doll. The new season will also be executive produced by Alex Buono, Poehler and Kate Arend for Paper Kite Productions, Headland, Lilly Burns and Tony Hernandez for Jax Media. Dave Becky of 3 Arts, along with Regina Corrado and Allison Silverman, will also serve as producers.
The second season of Russian Doll will be released on Netflix on April 20, 2022.
