After a tight first half that saw the two teams return to the locker room with a 1-1 draw, the second half didn't go as planned for the Rangers.
Kirill Marchenko ensured that the local heroes took a 2-1 lead after just 18 seconds, and despite Adam Edstrom's equalizer, the Blue Jackets were able to record their 19th win of the season a few minutes later thanks to goals from Jack Roslovic and Ivan Provorov.
Artemi Panarin for New York and Dmitri Voronkov for the local favorites were the other goalscorers in the game.
Despite the loss, the Rangers are still comfortably in first place in the Metropolitan Section. The Blue Jackets are currently last in the Eastern Conference.
The Jets are scared
The Winnipeg Jets were nearly upset by the Arizona Coyotes, but ultimately pulled away with a 4-3 overtime win.
In the three-on-one run, Kyle Connor gave his team the victory with a one-timer. Rick Bowness' team took a 3-1 lead in the first period with goals from Mark Scheifele, Gabriel Vilardi and Connor.
However, the Coyotes fell behind in the remainder of regular time thanks to goals from Matias Maccelli and Nick Schmaltz. The latter also caused the red light to flash during the Arizona team's first appearance.
The Coyotes are having a pretty tough time right now, posting an 0-8-2 performance in their last 10 games. As for the Jets, this win puts them at the top of the middle division, just one point behind the Dallas Stars.
A third in a row for the Sabres
Things have been looking up for the Buffalo Sabers of late as they recorded their third straight victory with a 3-2 shootout win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
However, their short winning streak could have come to an end on Sunday as they found themselves trailing 2-1 after a Martin Necas goal with just over five minutes to play.
Owen Power, playing his first game in 15 days, still ensured the two teams went into extra time by scoring an equalizer moments after Necas' strike.
In the shootout, it was Casey Mittelstadt who gave the Sabers the win. Tony DeAngelo scored first in the first period while Jeff Skinner provided the first answer for Don Granato's men.
