They have won 56 of their 72 games this season with 117 total points, about 20 more than their main rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Hathaway, key player in the altercations early in the game, finally had the last word by scoring the goal that made the difference at the end of the second period. The former Washington Capitals pounced on Matt Grzelcyk’s throwing return to score his 12th goal of the season.
“We were looking forward to meeting a team that might make the playoffs, a team that is struggling. This is how we will play [en séries]. It’s encouraging for my line but also for the club to play with our identity like this,” said Hathaway, who had previously struggled with Maroon earlier this season.
Patrice Bergeron and Victor Hedman had scored to make it 1-1 on both sides before the first break.
Two of the National League’s best goaltenders this season went head-to-head and it was Linus Ullmark who defeated Andrei Vasilevskiy. The Swede made 26 saves to sign his 35th win.
Carter Hart doesn’t give Wings anything
Carter Hart is in fine form these days and the Flyers goaltender continued his momentum by beating the Detroit Red Wings 3-0 in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon.
The 24-year-old Albertan has not given up even though his team is still a long way from a playoff spot. He has won his last four starts and posted his first shutout since late January.
The wings didn’t play like a team that had to go all out to get the bouncing ball. Despite seven power plays, the guests only steered 29 pucks towards Hart.
In his first start since December, Alex Nedeljkovic gave up twice in just 21 shots. Kieffer Bellows and Scott Laughton beat him in the second period. The second went there with a very nice shot without even looking at the goalkeeper.
Tyson Foerster completed the goal in the empty net. This is the seventh point in eight games for the 21-year-old Ontarian.
The octopus is having fun
In Nashville, the Seattle Kraken responded to the Predators with a 7-2 win, including four goals in the third period.
Both Western Conference teams are battling for the playoffs, and the Preds made it Thursday by winning 2-1 in the shootout. It was in this rematch that Seattle showed all their might.
Eeli Tolvanen injured his former club with two goals, but Nashville held on by reducing the deficit to 2-3 early in the third period. However, the guests were in full swing at this point with four goals in a row. Notably, Matty Beniers reached the 20-goal plateau, and Jared McCann scored his 35th goal of the season.
The Predators put on a lackluster performance at home, aiming just 16 shots at Philipp Grubauer. Tyson Barrie, Matt Duchene and Philip Tomasino each lost two points.
With 88 points, the Kraken are getting closer and closer to a ticket for the spring tournament. It’s more difficult for John Hynes’ team, who get stuck at 80 points.
