Now our vacations are getting more expensive – economy

Those who suffer from wanderlust will soon have to dig much deeper into their pockets for their vacation. Travel expert Ruefa therefore advises booking as soon as possible.

Massively rising prices for fuel, electricity and gas are also making travel more expensive. “Unfortunately, we have to assume that holidays will also be affected by the general price increase. Anyone who wants to save should book now,” warned Ruefa managing directors Helga Freund and Michele Fanton on Tuesday.

Bad news for anyone looking to wait in hopes of cool last-minute deals: The classic summer bargain hunt will likely be canceled because there are no matching deals, according to Fanton. However, just after Easter there may still be some special promotions and special offers to set the mood for the summer holidays.

Above all, flying is becoming more expensive.

According to Fanton, it is currently not possible to estimate exactly how high inflation will be. However, he assumes that rising kerosene prices will have a noticeable effect on “where people fly”. This means: the longer the journey, the more you will have to pay. In neighboring countries, the price increase is likely to have less impact. According to Helga Freund, existing reserves are not affected by price increases. Here is the promise of large providers not to pass on the additional costs.

84% plan a vacation

And the desire to travel in the country? According to the “Ruefa Reisekompass 2022” survey, 84 percent have already planned at least one holiday for this year. In all, Austrians want to travel for at least 18 days in 2022. The main holiday must last 11 days. Also consulted – the budget. On average, we want to spend 1,550 euros per person on travel. That’s 70 euros less than before the pandemic.

Also exciting: 66% want to travel with their own car this year – up from 49% in 2020. However, it has to be considered that the survey was conducted in February, just before the massive rise in fuel prices. 36% (2020: 45%) would like to use the plane, 19% (2020: 12%) plan to take the train on vacation.

76 percent also relax at home

Three out of four Austrians (specifically 76%) want to relax in Europe or Austria, only 20% are moving away due to the uncertainties over Corona. The main European destinations this year are Italy (36%), Croatia (31%), Germany (20%), Greece (13%) and Spain with the Canary Islands (12%). When it comes to long-haul destinations, the US is again in the lead with 23%. This is followed by Thailand (9%), Maldives (8%), United Arab Emirates (UAE, 8%) and Dominican Republic (6%).

Styria is the most popular in the home holiday category. 32 percent want to vacation here at least once this year. Carinthia (28%) and Salzburg (27%) are also at the top. Vorarlberg scored the least with 7%.
