Oberstdorf: Skier dies in avalanche in Allgäu Bavaria

A skier died in an avalanche in the Rappenalptal in the Allgäu Alps on Sunday. While descending from the 2,459-meter-high Linkerskopf, the 27-year-old was hit by a sheet of snow and dragged 600 to 800 meters, the Schwaben Süd/West police headquarters in Augsburg said.

The mountain rescue service from Oberstdorf arrived at the scene within minutes and managed to locate a sign of the man and rescue him a short time later. Despite immediate resuscitation measures, the tourist from Oberallgäu died at the scene of the accident.

According to police, the 27-year-old climbed Linkerskopf with three companions. When descending, he was the first in the group and was caught by the avalanche. The Alpine Police Task Force is investigating what happened. In addition to the mountain rescue service and the police, a team of rescue dogs and a Swiss rescue helicopter were also involved in the operation.
