A 71-year-old man has died and a 60-year-old woman was seriously injured after a wall fell over them in the modernist section of Barcelona’s Hospital de Sant Pau. The wall came down after a truck drove into the wall at the junction of Calle Sant Antoni Maria Claret and Calle Independencia.
The vehicle that caused the accident was a truck transporting medical waste from the hospital compound and collided with the modernist wall. At the time of the impact, the 71-year-old man and 60-year-old woman were walking on the sidewalk outside the hospital when they were crushed by debris. The health services of the same hospital transferred the woman inside the health center, where she is recovering from the injuries caused with a serious prognosis. The man died as a result of the impact without the health services being able to do anything to save his life.
Members of Barcelona Metropolitan Police, Ambulance Service and Barcelona Fire Brigade were at the scene. The Metropolitan Police of the Catalan capital has taken over the investigation.
The accident affects the itinerary of bus routes D50, V23, H8, 19, 47, 117, 191 and 192 that operate in the area.
