There is one of the largest fortresses in Italy

Just looking at the view from above in photography takes your breath away. You can only imagine what it would be like to see it live. One of the largest fortresses in Italy is located in Trentino-South Tyrol. It's called Castel Beseno, it's very close to Trento and offers incredible views of the Vallagarina.

Very impressive and excellently preserved, it is often known by its German name Pysein Castle. In the past it was an important hub for controlling the environment. It appears to have been created around the 12th century. It was part of it at first to the Counts of Eppan. However, it owes its name to the Beseno family, who were vassals of the Eppan family and once lived in these places.

We can say that the castle has had a mixed fate over the years, changing hands often. For a while it remained in the hands of the Trentino Church and then returned to the hands of the Besenos. Or rather, from some of their hereditary families, the Odolrico and the Enghelberto. Unfortunately, however, the feud between these families caused the fortress to fall into disrepair, at least until the 14th century, when the nobility William II of Castelbarcotook care of the restoration.

However, what threatened the survival of this fortress more than any internal feud was a terrible fire that threatened to raze it to the ground in 1500. On this occasion, Castel Beseno was partially rebuilt and remained so until there were some clashes between Napoleonic troops.

However, the real era of rebirth of this place occurred in 1973, when it was donated to the Province of Trento by the Von Trapp family. In this way, Beseno Castle was renovated and now houses the Buonconsiglio Castle Museum.
