Located within the ChatGPT chatbot, the GPT Store allows users to discover and create GPTs, or custom AIs, for tasks like teaching math or designing stickers.

OpenAI is trying to capitalize on the success of ChatGPT, which introduced generative AI to the world in late 2022, by astounding internet users with its ability to write prose and poetry like humans. The chatbot quickly became one of the fastest-growing applications, but lost momentum as courses closed over the summer and the novelty of the software wore off.

The GPT Store is initially rolling out to users who have a paid ChatGPT subscription. In the coming months, the company plans to add a way for GPT creators to monetize their personalized AIs.

A postponed start

The Microsoft-backed young company announced the GPT Store in November (new window) as part of its first developer conference. The store was originally scheduled to launch at the end of this month. But in December, OpenAI delayed the launch and said in an internal memo that it was continuing to make improvements to GPTs based on customer feedback.

The delay comes amid the surprise ouster of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman by the company's board and his reinstatement when employees threatened to resign.

The company announced Wednesday that it is launching ChatGPT Team, a version of ChatGPT that companies pay for their employees to use in the workplace. This new tool separates a company's data so that all information entered into the chatbot remains confidential to the company. The tool costs $25 to $30 (C$34 to $40) per person per month.
