Original Gerber Baby Ann Turner Cook familiar face on thousands

Original Gerber Baby Ann Turner Cook, familiar face on thousands of baby products, dies at 95

“Many years before she became an extraordinary mother, teacher and writer, her smile and expressive curiosity won hearts everywhere and will live on as a symbol for all babies,” Gerber said in a statement published online.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Ann’s family and to all who had the pleasure of meeting her,” it said.

A sketch of Cook’s baby face has been the iconic Gerber logo for more than 90 years.

It all started with a contest the company held to find a face for a baby food advertising campaign, according to the Gerber website.

Dorothy Hope Smith, a neighbor of Cook’s family, submitted a charcoal sketch she drew of Cook and said she would finish it if she won, according to the site.

Gerber baby food products are seen on a supermarket shelf April 12, 2007 in New York City.

The competition jury “fell in love with the baby face” and insisted it should remain a sketch.

“The image of this happy, healthy baby would soon become the face that launched a brand, a face recognized and loved around the world,” the company’s website reads.

However, the baby’s identity remained a secret until 1978, the company said.

According to Gerber, Cook later became a crime writer and English teacher.

“Mrs. Cook’s sparkling eyes and adorable, inquisitive baby face still embodies the Gerber brand and represents Gerber’s commitment to happy, healthy babies around the world,” it added.

Gerber is best known for its baby food and infant formula, but also sells children’s clothing, life insurance, and other products.
