The ex-Valencia player’s extraordinary goal brought an unexpected victory to the Navarrese team, who lost to Valencia in the second half, in which Sergio Herrera assisted him with a great performance, taking all three points in his only game of the season The second act was at stake, stopping a Valencia who had won in the first two days.
Valencia started the game confidently and dominantly, even if they lacked gunpowder in the last few yards, confirming Rubén Baraja’s aspiration to sign attacking players to strengthen his very young squad.
Osasuna didn’t worry Valencia with his excessively slow game, although a midfield robbery by Pablo Ibañez allowed him to plant like an exhale in the area where Thierry suffered the attack. At the VAR’s request, the referee checked the game on the monitor and signaled a penalty, which Aimar Oroz converted with class.
After the goal, Valencia lost consistency in their game and the Navarrese side felt more comfortable on the pitch, with some newcomers in the vicinity. In the closing minutes, the local team were encouraged once again and reinforced their dominance with several disturbing goals, but failed to equalize before half-time.
On the restart, Baraja brought on Portugal’s Andre Almeida for Diakhaby, edging out the position of Javi Guerra, who had barely touched the ball in act one. The youth team player took control of Valencia which kept Osasuna in his field.
The equalizer could have come from a great Almeida shot from outside the box, which Sergio Herrera struggled to clear and Hugo Duro failed to get the rebound on target. The Getafense attacker was luckier minutes later, bravely heading in a Javi Guerra cross at the far post to decide the game and end his goal drought after nearly a year without a goal.
Valencia sought victory and met goalkeeper Sergio Herrera, who had two crucial attacks, but in extra time it was Osasuna who converted a corner kick to score after Nacho Vidal saved a rebound from behind and secured victory for the Navarrese side.
