Overseas in the foreground: What are the priorities of the French overseas territories? Morning economy

Overseas: a particularly complex and complicated situation

If global warming and its consequences are the visible part of the challenges facing the overseas territories and departments, in particular through the increase in violence and the frequency of extreme climatic events, The French overseas territories find themselves in a situation that requires appropriate, precise and hyper-adapted responses.

In fact, insecurity is increasing rapidly against a background of poverty and unemployment, especially in Mayotte. The overseas territories have the highest unemployment rate in France, at well over 12%, compared to just over 10% in the worst departments in mainland France (and around 7% for France as a whole excluding Mayotte). A more than complicated situation, aggravated by monopolies and criminal networks that dictate their law.

Of course, these social problems are compounded by the difficulties that come with living in these remote areas, such as the cost of living itself, which is much higher than on the mainland. Not to mention the difficulties in accessing water for certain populations, difficulties that briefly made headlines in the French media in 2023.

How can we respond to these unique challenges?

To find one or more answers to these unique difficulties, Le Point will bring together foreign specialists and political leaders. Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior and Overseas Territories, accompanied by Philippe Vigier, Minister Delegate for Overseas Territories, will be invited to the Maison de L'Océan in Paris on February 1, 2024 to discuss possible solutions.

Other guests will be present including Pauline Pannier, Secretary General of the CNES (National Center for Space Studies), who will speak about Guyana and the Ariane 6 rocket. Guadeloupe MP Olivier Serva will speak about the need for the plane for overseas territories, at a time when air travel is increasingly being criticized for environmental reasons.

Or Micheline Jacques, senator from Saint-Barthélémy, an island affected by drinking water supply difficulties, will be present.

From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., back-to-back conferences will be held in person and online to discuss key issues for overseas territories. A third edition of the day “Overseas at the top” broadcast on X and on Le Point.fr but also on the EconomieMatin Facebook page.
