NASHVILLE | Kent Hughes described David Reinbacher as a diamond in the rough. The Canadian relied on the Austrian defender with his fifth pick overall. While some fans spoke of a surprise, that was not the case on the Bridgestone Arena floor.

“He was the player we wanted to sign at this rank,” said Martin Lapointe. On our list, the most popular choice was Reinbacher, ahead of Matvei Michkov. But when we looked at Reinbacher, we found that he ticked all the boxes: fast, mobile, smart, tough, characterful and a good person.”

Lapointe, the head of amateur recruitment, expressed that confidence as he exited the podium in the media room.

The former Detroit Red Wings winger knew the right-hander choice wasn’t a favorite for the vast majority of fans. But at the CH table, Hughes, Jeff Gorton, Nick Bobrov, Lapointe and the other recruiters were all under the spell of Reinbacher.

The Habs also ignored popular pressure in the 2022 draft in Montreal, picking Juraj Slafkovsky as top of the class in place of Shane Wright, who eventually slipped to fourth place with the Seattle Kraken.

Reinbacher will determine his own future. If he becomes a defenseman like Moritz Seider, the Detroit Red Wings’ sixth overall pick of 2019, he will silence his critics. And if he were to follow in Roman Josi’s footsteps with the Nashville Predators by magic, the CH would have won his bet with him.

no secret

Sitting alongside Lapointe on the podium, Bobrov also defended the choice of a defender instead of a forward in the fifth row.

“It’s no secret, we all know there are players who are still hard to win,” noted Bobrov, the co-director of amateur recruitment. We saw the series. For two months you become even more aware of what it takes to win. We believe David falls into this category of players. Every year, teams look to improve their fortunes in the draft to win over these types of defenders.

“We think he was the right player for us at that rank (5th),” he continued. We want to build a culture that fits our philosophy.”

Arrest in Poland of a Russian ice hockey player suspected

Arrest in Poland of a Russian ice hockey player suspected of spying for Russia

A Russian ice hockey player suspected of spying for Russia has been arrested in Poland, where he was playing at the national championship, the government announced on Friday, sparking “strong protest” from Moscow.

“The arrested man is a professional athlete from a premier league ice hockey club,” the government added in a statement, without giving his name. Since 2021 he lived in Poland.

“On the territory of Poland, he carried out foreign intelligence tasks, in particular the identification of sensitive infrastructure in several voivodeships (administrative districts, editor’s note)”, the government press release says.

The Russian national was arrested on June 11 in the Silesian Voivodeship in southern Poland, the same source said, without giving details of the hockey team the man played for.

According to prosecutors, this is the 14th person arrested as part of an investigation into a “spy network collaborating with the Russian secret services”.

Moscow expressed its “strong protest” against these arrests. “We demand that Russia be informed immediately and comprehensively,” said Russian foreign policy spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

The Russian embassy in Poland said it had “sent a notice to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs asking it (…) to inform it of the allegations made against the arrested ice hockey player.”

“So far, the Russian embassies and consulates in Poland have not received any official information from the relevant Polish authorities on this issue,” she complained.

According to a statement by the Polish prosecutor’s office, the 14 arrested Russians were “carrying out intelligence and propaganda activities against Poland”.

The Polish government assured that one of the groups’ tasks was to “monitor the railway lines” and spread “propaganda against NATO, Poland and the policies of the Polish government”.

Asked about the issue on Friday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov regretted “the very, very difficult work” of the Russian diplomatic mission in Warsaw, “due to the Russophobic attitude” of the Polish authorities.

After Meta, Google announces the end of Canadian news on its platform

Despite positive signals from Justin Trudeau yesterday, Google partners with Meta and announces it will censor all links to Canadian and Quebec media from its search results, a blow to the federal government and professional journalism.

• Also read: Meta will terminate all of its agreements with Canadian media

Google users will no longer see this news on Search, News and Discover, as well as the Google News Showcase in Canada “once the law goes into effect,” said Kent Walker, Google’s president of global affairs, in a blog post posted Thursday.

Listen to Marie Montpetit’s LCN segment about QUB radio:

“The Government has given us no reason to believe that the regulatory process can solve the structural problems of the legislation,” Mr Walker continues, saying he is “disappointed to have come this far”.

Just yesterday, Justin Trudeau said at a press conference “that we continue to have good discussions with Google”.

Listen to the interview of the moderator of the podcast “Mon Carnet” by Bruno Guglielminetti:

Google and Meta (owners of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) are at war with Ottawa over the Online News Act, which will force them to share some of the revenue from journalistic content.

After months of explicit threats and “tests,” the powerful multinationals went on the offensive after the bill finally passed the Senate last week.

In addition to Google, the agreements Meta has with The Canadian Press, Le Devoir, the Coops de l’information, the Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail will also end in the near future, the QMI Agency has learned.

  • Listen to the Gagnon-Montpetit meeting with Karine Gagnon, Deputy Information Director of the quebec newspaper, on the microphone by Marie Montpetit via QUB radio:

Malcolm Kirk, president of The Canadian Press, wrote a memo to staff on Thursday saying the current cohort of meta-scientists would be the last.

“We must carefully analyze the other financial and operational implications of the abrupt end of this program. We’ll keep you posted,” he said.

A Meta spokesman said the company would not comment at this time.

The President of the Quebec Journalists’ Association (FPJQ), Michaël Nguyen, urges the government not to “bow down” to this new “buzziness towards democracy” through “quasi-monopolies”.

A Google Canada representative, who aligns with TVA Nouvelles, says Bill C-18 is unfeasible for the American conglomerate.

“Bill C-18 has passed and remains unenforceable. The government has given us no reason to believe that the regulatory process can solve the structural problems of the legislation. As a result, we have informed the government that we have made the extremely difficult decision to suspend the inclusion of Canadian news links in our Search, News and Discover products in Canada.

Called for a response, Canada’s Heritage Minister regretted that Google, but also Meta, acted in this way.

“All options are on the table. Personally, I remain optimistic about continuing talks with Google, but you did it, we can’t have multinationals because they’re big, because they’re strong, because they have big lawyers who come to our house and tell us what to do and come and intimidate the Quebecers and Canadians and come and say, ‘Okay, you other MPs, you were elected by the people, but that doesn’t matter, we’re the ones in charge ‘ denounced Minister Pablo Rodriguez in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.

The Bloc Québécois and the NDP have called on Ottawa to retaliate and stop buying advertising on these platforms. The federal government bought $11.4 million worth of ads from Meta and $8.7 million from Google in 2021-2022. In Quebec, the Parti Québécois is demanding that Quebec do the same.

Canadian cyberlaw expert Michael Geist has been a lawbreaker from the start, saying Minister Pablo Rodriguez made an “own goal” with legislation “that has successfully deprived the industry of millions of pieces of information, leaving everyone in a much worse position than if they had.” they would have done “had done nothing at all”.

“Said”

“These companies obviously want to maintain their near-total dominance on the internet, and while that may be beneficial to their shareholders, it’s certainly not in the public interest.”

– Michaël Nguyen, President of the Quebec Journalists Association (FPJQ)

Honestly, who do they think they are, these people? These intimidation tactics are shameful. Like it or not, it’s time these billionaires paid their fair share.”

– Alexandre Boulerice, Vice President of the NDP

“We’re in the middle of an arm wrestling game where Meta and Google have decided to play the big guns […]. We call on the government not to bend its back in front of these multinational corporations and express our full support in this direction.

– Martin Champoux, spokesman for the Bloc Québécois for heritage

Gold Coast mother Rosie-May Fisher had to have her fingers amputated after a knot was found on her hand

I ignored the painless lump on my hand for 12 years and thought it was nothing. Eventually the doctors told me it was a rare form of cancer with only one devastating treatment

A single mother had to have two fingers amputated after a tiny lump on her hand was found to be a rare form of cancer.

Gold Coast woman Rosie-May Fisher, 32, had to give up her hairstyling career after being shocked last year.

Ms Fisher, who has a three-year-old son, Bobby, said her job was “all I ever really worked and dreamed about” and being a single mother is now a challenging task.

“At his age, it’s difficult to dress him up — even with two hands,” Fisher told 7NEWS.

Ms. Fisher had her middle and ring fingers amputated after being shocked to have cancer

“I can’t carry him or tie his shoelaces, or my own shoelaces, I can’t shop, push a cart, push a stroller.”

Ms Fisher said she first noticed the lump on her left palm in 2010 and it initially looked “soft and painless”.

After not taking much notice of it, Ms. Fisher asked a GP about it at an independent appointment about two years later.

A subsequent MRI scan showed that it was an unsuspecting and harmless sebaceous cyst.

Ms Fisher said things started to change after Bobby was born in 2020.

“The bump got bigger and hurt a little, to the point that holding my brush a certain way was quite painful,” she said.

Ms Fisher then went back to the GP and asked to have the “disturbing and painful” bump removed.

She had to wait a year before she could have surgery as it was deemed non-urgent and eventually it was removed in October 2022.

But then, when she had an appointment a week later to have her bandage fixed, Ms Fisher said the surgeon “came in with a really serious look on his face”.

“She told me that after the lump was removed, they did a biopsy of the lump and the result said it was a rare type of cancer,” Fisher said.

Ms Fisher said the shocking announcement left her “in disbelief”.

The cancer, epithelioid sarcoma, is a rare, slow-growing malignant tumor that usually begins in the superficial tissues of the hand or forearm and for which surgery is the most common treatment.

Ms Fisher is still recovering from the life-changing ordeal

Ms Fisher is still recovering from the life-changing ordeal

Ms Fisher was sent for further scans and after seeing a cancer specialist in Brisbane, she received the devastating news that the best way to stop the cancer was to amputate the middle and ring fingers on her left hand.

Ms Fisher said she had difficulty accepting the prognosis and was “out of her head”.

She got a second opinion from a Sydney-based specialist who told her: “You have to do it for your son.”

Ms Fisher was told that radiation was not an effective treatment for the condition, so in December she finally agreed to have both of her fingers amputated.

She said she was “still trying to get back on my feet” after the ordeal.

“It changed my life physically, mentally and emotionally,” she said.

“I don’t have a career.” “I don’t have nearly as much power as my other hand and I hate how it looks.”

Fisher wants to caution others to get a second medical opinion and believes an earlier biopsy could have prevented the amputation.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support Ms. Fisher.

“Rosie is the kindest person who would do anything for the people she loves,” GoFundMe organizers wrote on the page.

Decoding Vladimir Putins many appearances since the mutiny BBC

Decoding Vladimir Putin’s many appearances since the mutiny – BBC

Watch: Three key moments from Putin’s unusual week

Where is Vladimir Putin? That’s what we’ve been wondering for most of Monday — two days after a dramatic Wagner Group uprising that saw a convoy of mercenary fighters en route to Moscow.

A spokesman for Mr Putin late Saturday announced an agreement to end the Wagner mutiny. But when would the President himself comment on the controversial agreement?

It was controversial because the Wagner mercenaries rebelled, seized (seemingly effortlessly) military sites, and then marched on Moscow; Russian Air Force pilots were killed in the mutiny. Still, the Kremlin had agreed not to prosecute Wagner fighters or their leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in exchange for calling off the uprising.

Over the past week, President Putin has made a series of unusual public appearances – all televised – in what appears to be an attempt to calm the situation.

Monday: Address to the nation

On Monday we hear from Mr. Prigozhin: an audio message published online, in which he lays out his side of the story. He says his men traveled to Moscow to “hold accountable” the leaders he blamed for “mistakes” in the Ukraine war.

Then, late in the evening, an announcement is made. “Ready: President Putin will address the nation.” Now it seems the Kremlin boss is catching up.

Putin appears on TV screens after 10 p.m. A nightly speech from him is very unusual. Rumors are circulating on social media that this speech will “decide the fate of Russia.” With trepidation, we turn on Russian television to hear the President’s speech.

It quickly becomes clear that this address will not decide the fate of the country. There are no major announcements. But the five-minute speech offers clues as to how the Kremlin will use the weekend’s dramatic events to its advantage.

Putin paints a picture of a Russia united to defeat the treachery of the Wagner leaders.

He tries to get everyone on his side: he thanks the Russian public, Russian officials, religious leaders, the Russian armed forces and its security services. He distinguishes between the leaders of the mutiny and the regular Wagner fighters and commanders, whom he lauds as patriots. Crucially, he portrays himself as the man who prevented great bloodshed.

“As soon as these events became apparent,” he says, “measures were taken under my direct orders to avoid bloodshed.”

Do you remember the controversy I spoke about? He doesn’t go into that. But hey, Russia has come back from the abyss. That’s the main thing.

Tuesday: Face to face with the troops

On Monday he played to catch up. Full steam ahead Tuesday morning to restore his authority.

At a hastily arranged event, the Russian authorities place great emphasis on pageantry and ceremonies. Around 2,500 soldiers, Russian guards and security officers are lined up on the Kremlin’s Cathedral Square. This is the site of the coronation (and funeral) processions of Russian tsars.

Cue Putin: to the President’s fanfare, he descends the Kremlin’s many steps into the square (red carpet throughout, of course) and against the backdrop of the onion-domed Kremlin cathedrals, the President – and supreme commander – delivers a speech to his troops.

But even before he begins to speak, the pictures say it all. Here everything is in one place: the Orthodox Church, the Kremlin, the President and the army. It reminds me of the old Imperial Russian slogan: “For the Faith, for the Tsar and the Fatherland.”

In other words, the visual message here is about portraying Russia as a country behind Vladimir Putin. It’s almost as if they want Russians to believe that the church, the military, and the president are connected, even part of a whole.

In his brief address, President Putin again claims that Russian society has come together again after the Wagner mutiny. But most of what he says is praising his military for “stopping a civil war.”

There is a minute’s silence for the Luftwaffe pilots who were killed. The President pays his respects but still doesn’t address why Wagner fighters aren’t being prosecuted for their deaths.

talk over Call out the national anthem and a gun salute.

Overall message: The president doesn’t just call the shots. With the help of the Russian army and the Russian people, he has just won a great victory.

Wednesday: Very close

This is probably the most surprising Putin video of the week – maybe of the year. That’s because he’s very unlike Putin when it comes to getting as close to the crowd as possible.

The official reason for President Putin’s visit to Dagestan is to chair a meeting on domestic tourism.

But it is not the meeting that later dominates the news on Russian television. It’s the crazy scenes that follow.

The Kremlin chief can be seen being hounded by an enthusiastic crowd in the town of Derbent.

We’ve gotten used to Vladimir Putin keeping his distance from those he comes in contact with. Remember those long Kremlin tables with Putin safely seated at one end and his guests at the other?

Not here. In Dagestan, he kisses children, hugs women, shakes hands and poses for photos.

“Screaming, squealing, applause,” exclaims the host of a popular talk show on the Russia-1 channel. “Even rock stars don’t get that welcome. The West scoffs at the weakening of the president after the Prigozhin mutiny. This proves that the opposite is the case.”

Putin’s behavior seems so atypical. On the other hand, nothing feels particularly normal in Russia anymore.

The Russian President had just survived an armed mutiny. Perhaps he feels the need to show the country, the political elite, and himself that he still has supporters out there. A “spontaneous” expression of public worship would be just the ticket.

Looking at these pictures, I suddenly remember what happened last weekend after the agreement to end the mutiny was reached. When Wagner fighters led by Mr. Prigozhin left Rostov on Saturday night, they were cheered on the streets.

Did Vladimir Putin see these pictures? Does he feel the need for his own “hero” moment?

We’ll probably never know.

Thursday: Standing ovation…and doodles

President Putin attends an economic conference on Russian brands in Moscow. It’s not exactly another rock star moment.

Yet every opportunity must be given to show that he is (a) in charge, (b) active, and (c) has the support of the people.

The Russian President is applauded as he enters the hall. He sits down and listens as one of the organizers gives the opening speech.

“Vladimir Vladimirovich, together with you and the whole country, we too experienced the events of June 24 [the mutiny] out of fear,” she says to Putin. “We are all on your side and we all support you.”

As if to prove it, the delegates gave Vladimir Putin a standing ovation.

We see another, slightly more bizarre, video of the same event. President Putin doodles on an interactive whiteboard.

The result is a cartoonish red face with three strands of hair. A strange image from a leader who has learned the art of political survival.

Lines of loyal troops, gun salutes, screaming fans and a standing ovation. With pictures like this, the Kremlin boss is trying to show that he’s back in control.

He even has time to doodle. He needs to feel safe.

After the mutiny, we saw a turbocharged Putin this week. He was here, he was there, he seemed to be everywhere. It was almost as if he had started his campaign for re-election (his term as president expires next year).

But positive images do not change the fact that the uprising took the Kremlin by surprise. It was a threat. The Wagner fighters were on their way to Moscow when the mutiny was called off. It was an unprecedented challenge to Putin’s authority.

And the long-term consequences of this are still unclear.

United CEO admits he took private jet amid US flight woes

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby apologized on Friday for chartering a private jet at the height of the nationwide weather-related travel disruption earlier this week, which has seen thousands of flights delayed and canceled.

Kirby flew on a private jet from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey to Denver, Colorado on Wednesday, a United spokesman confirmed to CBS News.

According to flight-tracking website FlightAware, more than 7,400 US flights were delayed Wednesday and another 1,200 US flights were canceled.

Kirby said in a statement to CBS News Friday night that it was “the wrong decision” to charter the jet “because it was insensitive to our customers who were waiting to get home.”

He continued, “We sincerely apologize to our customers and our team members who have worked around the clock for several days – often in inclement weather – to take care of our customers.”

His apology comes just days after he criticized the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision to cancel hundreds of flights last weekend due to the severe weather.

In an email to employees Monday, Kirby said the FAA “abandoned” United by specifically ordering flight cancellations and delays at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey amid difficult weather conditions that the company ” historically mastered”.

The FAA, which monitors air traffic in the United States, responded to Kirby’s criticism by emailing CBS News that it “will always work with anyone who is genuinely willing to join us to resolve an issue.” “.

Air travel was still tight as the July 4 bank holiday weekend began. More than 400 US flights were canceled and 6,700 delayed as of Friday night, FlightAware said.
