The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office announced today that hikers have found a body in the wilderness of Mount Baldy, the same area where actor Julian Sands disappeared in January. The announcement doesn’t mention the actor, but promises: “Identification should be completed next week. At that time we will update this press release.”
The sheriff’s office released the following notice at 5:27 p.m. today:
At approximately 10:00 am on Saturday, June 24, 2023, civilian hikers contacted the Fontana Sheriff’s Station after discovering human remains in the Mt. Baldy wilderness. Fontana Station officers, along with the Sheriff’s Department’s Emergency Response Unit, responded at the scene. The deceased was taken to the coroner’s office pending positive identification. Identification should be complete next week. At that time we will update this press release. Further details are currently not available.
The discovery comes just over 24 hours after Sands’ family made their first statement on the matter, saying they were “deeply grateful to the search teams and coordinators who worked tirelessly to find Julian.”
The search for Sands had been temporarily suspended this spring due to severe winter conditions in the western United States. San Bernardino sheriffs said they conducted eight searches to find the British actor, a veteran outdoorsman, in addition to eight other searches.
Efforts increased again last Saturday. Officials said more than 80 search and rescue workers, deputies and collaborators took part in the search, which took place Saturday in nearby wilderness and remote areas across the mountain. The operation included two helicopters and drone crews.
Located in the San Gabriel Mountains less than 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles, Mount Baldy is one of the region’s highest peaks at over 11,000 feet. Although the area is close to the country’s second largest metropolis, parts of it are difficult to access due to the steep terrain and ravines, especially in winter when Sands disappeared. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said last week that some parts of the wilderness were still covered with a 10-foot layer of snow.
