Prince Harry, solo, stayed on the sidelines of the coronation

Prince Harry appeared alone at the coronation of his father, King Charles III, and stayed on the edge of pageantry all day.

Harry had no formal role in the coronation service at Westminster Abbey. He was denied a seat in a carriage for the grand procession back to Buckingham Palace. And he didn’t join other members of his family on the palace balcony for the last moment.

This was the first known time he has seen his family since the release of his memoir Spare and the release of his Netflix documentary Harry and Meghan – both attacking his royal relatives and the courtiers who work for them.

Harry had played a similarly marginal role at his grandmother’s platinum jubilee in June, which palace officials explained at the time by noting he was no longer a “senior working king” after relinquishing that responsibility in January 2020.

But since then, family relations seem to have continued to deteriorate. And it’s now his father, not his grandmother, who makes the ultimate decisions about how royal events are choreographed.

On Saturday, Harry walked into the Abbey smiling and laughing with his cousin Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank. Harry’s own wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex stayed behind in California, palace officials said.

Harry sat in the third row of pews reserved for the royal family. British newspapers have suggested it was a demotion – one row down from where he sat at the funeral of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September. At times his vision seemed to be obscured from him by the red feather on his aunt Princess Anne’s hat.

Also in the third row: Harry’s uncle Prince Andrew, still in the royal wilderness after Queen Elizabeth stripped away his titles and patronage when he was sued by a woman who said she was coerced into having sexual encounters with him. (It is widely believed that Elizabeth tacitly contributed to his legal settlement of this case.)

During the service, Harry was seen saying “God save King Charles” during a tribute to the King. But it was his elder brother, William, the heir who stood up for the kin, kneeling at his father’s feet and swearing allegiance to him ‘as your liege man for life and limb’.

Harry, who served on two deployments to Afghanistan, was denied a military uniform at royal events and on Saturday wore medals pinned to the jacket of his morning suit.

Whether he could join his father and Queen Camilla on the balcony of Buckingham Palace had been a question that started the day. Palace officials were quite shy. In the end, the gathering on the balcony was larger than at the anniversary, but Harry wasn’t among the family members waving to the crowd.

He was scheduled to return to the United States shortly after the coronation. The tabloids reported that his car was headed towards Heathrow Airport. Saturday was also his son Prince Archie’s fourth birthday.

At the end of the first Friday night at Citizens Bank Park, Bryce Harper stepped up to the plate and time stood still.

Well, not exactly. Expecting the two-time MVP to receive a standing ovation in his first home plate appearance since Game 5 of the World Series last November, the Phillies petitioned Major League Baseball for permission to suspend the speed-the-game clock , which has done so much to carve out the dead space from the times of previous games this season.

So the clock was turned off as Harper joined in the appreciated applause and chants of “MVP! MVP!” for a full 36 seconds.

The moment was significant on several levels. First, and quite obviously, it gave the home fans an opportunity to show their appreciation for a player who had returned in record time from Tommy John’s elbow surgery.

Second, it gave Harper an opportunity to tweak MLB a bit for a minor kerfuffle that surfaced at Dodger Stadium Wednesday when the umpires refused to give him extra time to put on the brace he’s wearing to his surgically repaired to protect elbows. So he mischievously suggested that he would enjoy his reception just a little more than he otherwise would have.

“I’ll enjoy this for a second,” he said with a mischievous grin.

Finally, it was a nice reminder that even the best players in the game, the kind that get a standing ovation, can have players that make them a little naïve.

Red Sox left fielder Masataka Yoshida, the Japanese star who signed with Boston earlier this season, has been open about his admiration for Harper. That prompted the Phillies hitter-designate to reminisce about his own crushes when he was younger.

“Everyone who is born at 19 is going to have someone like that,” he said. “For me, it was Derek Jeter. Stand on second base and see Jeter. Or one of these guys. I grew up a huge Yankees fan. That was definitely really cool. to see Bernie Williams. Mariano Rivera. You can go on and on.

“I remember my first spring practice (at the Nationals). I was 17 or 18 and we were playing in Melbourne, Florida. I actually got in trouble for watching her BP. They told me to go inside. The Nationals did. Instead of watching some of the players in the world. That didn’t really make sense to me. It was really crazy. To be able to sit there and watch (Robinson) Cano, Alex Rodriguez, Jeter, Mark Teixiera. I mean, some of the biggest thugs of my generation.”

So it’s an honor that Yoshida looks up to him.

“When you’re younger you try to look up to boys and imitate boys. For me that was my father. I remember watching him work his ever loving cock to take care of us. And to be able to have that impact on other people is pretty cool. So it’s a very humbling situation to be someone to look up to in every area of life.

“He was able to come here and have great success in his first few weeks. Especially in this Boston market, it’s really cool to know how difficult it is for him to do that at this point.

The bloodshed of a horse, a royal child bored during the ceremony, a tribe supporting Charles III. pays homage… Franceinfo has made a selection of amazing moments that happened on Saturday.

At the end of a historic day with a precise program, Saturday May 6th, King Charles III. and Queen Camille was crowned in London (UK) eight months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Westminster Abbey, where the Archbishop of Canterbury Charles III. presented the insignia, was the scene of a great, solemn and magnificent ceremony. Not quite planned and sometimes a bit amusing moments shaped the day anyway. Franceinfo has made a small illustrated selection.

1 A rearing horse during the procession

On the way back from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace, a rider momentarily lost control of his horse. The animal backed up sharply and crashed into the crowd, ramming some guards and members of the public. The incident occurred as the motorcade was following the golden carriage carrying the Gold State Coach, King Charles III. and brought Queen Camilla back to the palace after the religious ceremony.

2 A Pacific tribe who ruled Charles III

The prize for the most amazing celebration of Charles III’s coronation. undoubtedly goes to Tanna, a volcanic island in the south of the Vanuatu archipelago, which believes the king’s father, Prince Philip, to be a god. The origin of this belief is not clearly explained, but according to anthropologists it is based on an ancient prophecy that predicts the return of a white-skinned son from the island. However, the prince visited the island in the 1970s.

4 The singer Katy Perry struggling to find her place
