European Parliament votes in favor of minimum wage

The European Parliament has spoken out in favor of common standards for minimum wages. A majority of MEPs voted in Strasbourg on Wednesday to consider the minimum wage fair if it reflects 50 percent of average gross income.

In early June, representatives of the EU Parliament and member states reached agreement on common standards for the minimum wage. Formal consent from both sides was still lacking. Member States are expected to formally agree in early October. The proposed directive aims to improve minimum wage protection for workers who are entitled to a minimum wage through a statutory minimum wage or collective agreements. Collective bargaining to determine wages should also be promoted. Member States where collective bargaining coverage is less than 80% should have plans to increase the rate.

Member countries must allow “a decent life”.

The planned directive does not oblige member states to introduce statutory minimum wages, nor does it establish a common minimum wage level in the EU. However, member states “must ensure that their national minimum wages allow workers to lead a decent life”, declared the EU Parliament.

According to the EU statistics agency Eurostat, 21 of the 27 EU countries have national legal minimum wages. Minimum wages are only protected by collective agreements in six Member States. After member states have also given their consent, the respective countries have two years to transpose the directive into national law.

The double face of gossip. Fuel to launch a character’s career, but also a highly toxic substance that must be handled with caution when it invades the private sphere in disruptive ways. Whether or not Aurora Ramazzotti is pregnant according to these terms, we don’t really care. The toast, if it comes when she says it, in the way and at the time she always wanted it to be, rather than a stolen newspaper photo and a ridiculous anecdote about an hCG test. As the chatter gets underway, the 25-year-old continues to post on her very popular social channels and fulfill her work commitments.

Who is Princess Anne, who drew attention at the farewell of Queen Elizabeth II ?

Known for his strong character and discretion in the exercise of his monarchical functions, the Princess Anna rarely shows his feelings. THE daughter of Elizabeth IIHowever, he couldn’t hide his sadness as he accompanied his mother’s funeral procession.

With Charles III in London to perform his first duties as king, Anne was responsible for escorting the sixhour procession from Balmoral Castle to Edinburgh.

The British were moved by him Worship in front of the mother’s coffin on arrival in the Scottish capital, in an act of respect for the Queen after a lifetime of service. As the only female child of the monarch, Anne has held the title of Princess Royal since 1987.

Last Monday (12) she walked alongside King Charles III. and his two brothers during the procession that carried the coffin of Elizabeth II from Holyrood Castle to Saint Giles Cathedral.

Anne has a reputation for being the hardest working member of the family and combining a career in equestrian sport which has led to her competing Olympic games (Montreal1976) with a life of public commitments that remains discreet even at a steady pace, far removed from scandals in recent years.

With the same sincerity that characterized her father, Prince Philip, she was already stating that her character “is not what everyone thinks of a fairytale princess.” “You learn the hard way,” he said. “There is no school for kings,” he added.

The Return to Nature by Pierre Poilievre

The Return to Nature by Pierre Poilievre

To an exemplary speech during his election as leader of the Conservative PartyPierre Poilievre quickly returned to the natural.

The new leader doesn’t trust the media. Like Donald Trump, social media maniacs and conspirators! In an email to all members of his party yesterday, he wrote that “the media is not even interested in being neutral anymore. They want us to lose.” Then, in the purest Trumpian style, he adds: “We cannot rely on the media to get our messages across to Canadians. We need to bypass them and their biased reporting.”

The day before, the new boss had expressed outrage to the press – with good reason – about the untimely interruptions of Donald Atkins, the global TV network’s chief political correspondent. Atkins was quick to apologize on Twitter, adding that “there are better ways to make sure politicians answer questions.” During the leadership campaign, I wrote a column asking Mr Poilievre to explain what he intends to do with Radio-Canada when he becomes Prime Minister. I’m still waiting for the answer.

WHAT FUTURE FOR CBC/RADIO CANADA?

In the email to his supporters, Poilievre reiterated his promise to “disappoint the CBC”. What exactly is he up to? Does he want to abolish the English network altogether? Or do you reduce it to its simplest expression, namely its continuous information service? CBC radio is very popular, as evidenced by the UK channel’s unfortunate lockout in August 2005. Does Poilievre intend to cut or even eliminate the radio’s budget? As for the French network, the conservative leader understands its importance to Quebecers and francophone minorities outside of Quebec, having grown up in Saskatchewan in a francophone home himself.

He declared during his campaign that he would not touch the French network. But it’s not without knowing that more than one has criticized Radio-Canada for its specialty pay channels and the increasingly substantial sums the network sustains on its digital platforms. The Liberal government has always said it is ready to increase the public broadcaster’s budget so that it can at least rid itself of advertising. This is one of the things the Liberals agreed with in Janet Yale’s panel report. What is Poilievre’s take on the report? In the Northwest Territories, Nunavik and Nunavut, CBC/Radio-Canada plays what I believe to be an essential role. Is that also the opinion of Pierre Poilievre?

THE MEMORY OF ITS PRECURSORS

If the Conservative leader speaks ample French and English, he has been more than discreet on cultural issues during the leadership race. Since he proposes state withdrawal in a variety of areas, we can understand that he could also “defund” the Canada Council for the Arts, the National Arts Center in Ottawa, the museums that run under federal and cultural organizations like Telefilm , the NFB and the Media Fund? Perhaps he is thrifty with the various tax credits that support arts and culture, and just as indifferent as Stephen Harper to our artists’ influence on the ‘foreign?

It is all the more important that Pierre Poilievre announces his cultural intentions, since his recent predecessors did not leave a very good memory.

Harvey Weinstein is asking the judge to release him from prison to see a private dentist

‘This situation is an emergency’: Harvey Weinstein is asking the judge to release him from prison to see a private dentist – fearing prison medics will pull out his rotten teeth and leave cavities unfilled

  • Harvey Weinstein told judges his Rotten molars had become a dental “emergency”.
  • Weinstein is currently serving 23 years after being convicted of sexual abuse
  • Weinstein is on trial in October for sexually assaulting five women
  • He argued that he should be allowed to make bridges or false teeth look “presentable” in court

Harvey Weinstein has asked a judge to let him see a private dentist instead of having prison paramedics pull out his rotten teeth and leave gaping holes in his mouth.

The disgraced film producer said his rotting molars had become a dental “emergency” while pleading before a judge in a Los Angeles courtroom.

Weinstein, who was serving 23 years after his conviction on sexual charges in New York, said, “I’m going to pay for the dentist … it’s going to be a trip and a trip only.”

The 70-year-old is being jailed ahead of an Oct. 10 trial on charges of raping and sexually abusing five women between 2004 and 2013. At the negotiation.

“I’m in pain every day. I have tooth decay and I can’t eat because I’m missing teeth,” Weinstein told Judge Lench, reports the New York Post.

The disgraced film producer’s attorney, Mark Werksman, said dentists at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility told Weinstein he could either have his rotten teeth pulled without a replacement or let them continue to decay.

Mr. Werksman claimed that not allowing Weinstein to see a private dentist would violate his constitutional rights.

The attorney added that a gaping hole in front of Weinstein’s mouth would make him look “ridiculous” and “like a caricature” before his trial.

But Judge Lench told Weinstein that while he is able to pay for transportation to and from the private dentist, the trip would involve a number of sheriff’s department employees — meaning his request went beyond the norm.

Weinstein is awaiting his Oct. 10 trial on charges including 11 counts of rape and sexual assault involving five women in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills dating back to 2004 and 2013.

During Wednesday’s hearing, prosecutors also asked the judge to allow two witnesses living in Italy to testify via video link instead of traveling to the United States for the trial.

The judge ordered witness Lubov Smirnova, who worked for one of Weinstein’s alleged victims and their families, to appear in person, the New York Post reports. But a second witness, Pascal Vicedomini, will appear via video for medical reasons.

Meanwhile, in another case, the New York Supreme Court has agreed to appeal Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction.

Weinstein was convicted in New York in February 2020 for forcibly performing oral sex on TV and film production assistant Mimi Haley on “Project Runway” in 2006 and for raping an aspiring actress in 2013.

He was acquitted of first-degree rape and two counts of predatory sexual assault stemming from allegations by actress Annabella Sciorra of a mid-1990s rape.

Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison and is currently in custody in California awaiting trial on October 10.

In June he was also charged in the UK for the indecent assault on a woman in London in 1996.

It’s unclear if that case will ever go to court, as UK officials would have to decide whether to seek his extradition while he’s already serving a lengthy sentence in the US.

In all, nearly 90 women, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Salma Hayek, have accused Weinstein of molestation or assault. He denies all allegations.

Russia continues to bomb Ukrainian civilian infrastructure

Russia continues to bomb Ukrainian civilian infrastructure

On Wednesday afternoon, the Russian army fired some rockets at the Ukrainian town of Kryvyi Rih, located in the southern Dnipropetrovsk region, some fifty kilometers north of the Russian-held areas. A dam on the Inhulets River was hit and damaged in the attack, and water flooded several streets and inundated the city. It is another Russian attack on civilian infrastructure that is not strategic from a military point of view, and according to Ukrainian authorities it was carried out in revenge for the Ukrainian army’s recent victories in the north-east of the country.

After the attack, in which an estimated eight rockets were fired in total, city authorities immediately ordered the evacuation of hundreds of civilians, and night-time attacks on the dam aggravated the situation, causing water levels on some streets to drop 2.5 meters.

It’s unclear if Russia actually intended to hit the dam to cause flooding in the city. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), an American study center specializing in military analysis, it is more likely that the actual aim of the attack was to hit the dam to damage a bridge along the course of the river , which was erected in recent days by Ukrainian forces as part of the counter-offensive to recapture Kherson.

Commenting on the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was born in Kryvyi Rih, said the dam had no military value and damaging it was an attempt to attack the city’s residents. “That is another reason why Russia will lose. You are weak people waging war against civilians. Villains who, having fled the battlefield, try to harm distant people ».

In this last sentence, Zelenskyy refers to the events of the last few days in north-eastern Ukraine, where an unexpectedly quick and effective counter-offensive enabled the Ukrainian army to retake many Russian-held areas and forced them to retreat. .

At the moment, the Russian authorities have not commented on the attack, but it would not be the first time that Russia has attacked civilian infrastructure to create trouble for Ukraine. For example, last week a Russian bombing raid hit and destroyed the power grid infrastructure that supplies Enerhodar, a town near the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, causing a prolonged power outage, while the Russian army bombed various infrastructures in the east of the country after Ukraine’s counter-offensive, leaving thousands again back from people without light and heating.
