Patrick Mahomes challenges the Chiefs to defeat the Titans in overtime, throwing for over 400 yards

The Tennessee Titans went all out with rookie quarterback Malik Willis starting in one of football’s most hostile environments, but it was the Kansas City Chiefs who won their Sunday night overtime matchup 20-17 to give the Titans the five- Match win to secure streak.

The Chiefs won the coin toss and got the ball down the field while Patrick Mahomes quickly got the ball into the hands of his playmakers. They even went fourth and one at the Titans’ 13-yard line, though only one field goal would result as Tennessee got the stops needed to give themselves a chance.

Willis had a chance, but like the Chiefs in the second half, they let him throw and he couldn’t get anything going. Two sacks on the second and third down led to an impossible fourth and 26 that resulted in an incomplete pass, and the Chiefs made their comeback.

There were 68 attempts by Mahomes, who completed 43 of them for 446 yards with a passing touchdown and an interception. He found Travis Kelce 10 times for 106 yards as well as 10 receptions for Juju Smith-Schuster for 88 yards.

Mahomes also rushed for 63 yards and a quick touchdown with six carries.

For the Titans, Willis only went 5-for-16 for 80 yards. Also, not a single wide receiver caught a ball from Willis in that game, as his receptions ended on tight ends Chigoziem Okonkwo and Austin Hooper, as well as Hassan Haskins, a running back.

Tennessee relied on its running game — Derrick Henry had 115 yards on 17 carries and two points after putting up over 200 against the Houston Texans last week — and solid defense to deal with the Chiefs not finding answers early could.

But with the Titans unable to place points on the board, it felt like Kansas City would eventually respond.

CHIEFS’ TRAVIS KELCE THROWS THE HELMET AFTER INTERCEPTION In frustration

There were only two games in his career where Mahomes had under 10 points, so he had to make some moves in the fourth quarter when the Chiefs took over 17-9 at their own seven-yard line.

Mahomes is used to dazzling with his arm, but it was his legs that did most of the work on this ride. On the third and 17th, the Titans had a golden opportunity to get the ball back in their hands, but Mahomes scrambled to his feet and let a couple of defenders miss 20 yards and the first hit.

Then, in third and ninth place in Titans territory, Mahomes found a hole on the right and took it for 14 yards into the end zone to make it 17-15. The two-point conversion saw a few flags but Mahomes used his legs again this time to go left and put him in the tie.

With the momentum on their side and Arrowhead Stadium as rough as ever, the Titans couldn’t run across the field and quickly gave the ball back to the Chiefs at the two-minute warning. But nothing came of it as it took overtime to pay it off.

The Chiefs burned tons of time in the first quarter to start this game, elapsing 8 minutes and 13 seconds over 15 games. Due to penalties in the red zone, they were only able to get one field goal out of it.

However, Mahomes went downfield again and found Mecole Hardman for a 7-yard touchdown pass to put it 10-0 early.

The Titans would respond with their own touchdown, and it was Willis and Henry running across the field. Willis had 16-yard and 17-yard runs while Henry took a 24-yard run to create a chance for Tennessee in the red zone.

After a defensive offside, Henry had a four-yard rush to reduce the deficit to three.

But Henry wasn’t done finding the end zone. He went 56 yards to start the Titans’ next drive and would eventually get the ball just a yard over the goal line for his second touchdown of the day, giving his team a 14-9 lead.

However, a field goal from Randy Bullock in the third quarter was all they could score in the second half as the Chiefs’ defense adjusted to the run-heavy offense.

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker also had a tough night before the game-winning field goal from 28 yards. He missed an extra point after the Hardman touchdown and couldn’t get through a 47-yarder in the third quarter either.
