Peru is considering chemical castration for child rapists

After a rape case that shocked the country, Peru says it is ready to hand down a harsh sentence. Peruvian President Pedro Castillo said Saturday that his government wants to impose mandatory chemical castration for child rapists, among other drastic measures against these crimes.

A measure that is already being used in several countries

Pedro Castillo named Russia, Poland, South Korea, Indonesia and Moldova as countries where chemical castration of rapists is already practiced. This consists of administering medications that inhibit sexual desire, either preventatively or to prevent it from recurring.

According to the Peruvian Ministry of Women’s Rights, more than 21,000 minors have been victims of rape in the past four years. 6,929 cases were listed for 2021 alone. In Peru, rapists of minors under the age of 14 risk life imprisonment.
