At least three people were killed and several injured in the accident involving a regional train that derailed in the Bavarian Alps in southern Germany, local police said on Friday.
Several wagons on the Garmisch-Partenkirchen connection went off the tracks in Burgrain, killing three people and injuring an “undetermined number of other passengers”, the Bavarian police said in a press release.
“Rescue and evacuation operations are continuing at a steady pace,” police added. Help was also sent from neighboring Austria.
Photos published by the German media show the partially derailed regional train, wagons lie in a forested area in a mountainous region.
The victims were treated on site by doctors.
The cause of the accident and the exact number of injuries are not yet known.
The accident happened about ten kilometers away from where the summit of the G7 heads of state and government is to take place at the end of June, planned in the 5-star complex of Schloss Elmau.
