What a way rings in the year 2024!

A lucky Powerball ticket holder in Michigan won the estimated $842 million jackpot in a historic drawing Monday night.

The winning numbers were 12, 21, 42, 44, 49 with a red Powerball of 1.

According to the lottery's website, it is the first time a ticket holder has hit the jackpot on New Year's Day since the game was introduced in 1992.

The winning ticket was sold at a Food Castle grocery store in Grand Blanc, Michigan, 60 miles north of Detroit.

The millionaires' club's newest member can choose between the grand prize of $842 million, paid out in 30 intervals over 29 years, or a one-time payout worth $425.2 million.

“What an incredible start to the new year for Powerball!” Drew Svitko, chairman of the Powerball Product Group and executive director of the Pennsylvania Lottery, said in a statement.

Two tickets sold in Florida and Texas won $2 million after matching all five white numbers and using the lottery's Power Play feature.

An additional four individual tickets sold in California, Connecticut, Florida and Maryland matched all five white numbers for a $1 million prize.

The lottery's next drawing on January 3rd will again feature a minimum grand prize of $20 million.

The odds of winning Powerball's top prize are an astronomical 1 in 292,201,338.

The drawing marks the first Powerball jackpot win of 2024 — and the first since Oct. 11, when a California ticket holder won the second-largest prize in the game's history.

This ticket holder won a $1.76 billion prize at Midway Market & Liquors in Frazier Park, California, a supermarket 75 miles north of Los Angeles.

The winner's identity remains anonymous but is believed to be a local who visited the store “for religious reasons” to play the lottery, a store employee claimed.

Edwin Castro lived a life of luxury after receiving the $2.07 billion prize – and then settled for the one-time lump sum payment of $997.6 million.

He is focused on building his real estate portfolio, purchasing three villas in California for a total of $76 million, and luxury vacations.

After winning, the 31-year-old Los Angeles resident “disappeared” from social media and went on vacation to Fiji with some friends for a few weeks
