Havana, March 21 (Prensa Latina) Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel today spoke out in favor of celebrating the Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination every day.
“According to the United Nations, today is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It should be every day. The world’s guilt towards the victims of racism is too great. Another World #MejorEsPosible,” the President wrote on his Twitter account.
The day is celebrated on March 21 each year to commemorate the fact that police opened fire in 1960, killing 69 people, during a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid passport law being practiced in Sharpeville, South Africa.
With the proclamation of the day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of discrimination based on skin color.
According to this multilateral organization, the theme of this year 2023 focuses on the urgency of combating racism and racial discrimination, since even this scourge continues to affect people around the world.
