Princess Mary's bridesmaid Amber Petty looks regal at the Australian Open – just hours before her best friend becomes Queen of Denmark

Princess Mary's bridesmaid Amber Petty stepped out in royal purple at the Australian Open on Sunday, just hours before her best friend was set to become Queen of Denmark.

Petty, 53, who stood by Princess Mary's side on her wedding day, cut a casual figure in a figure-hugging dress that consisted of a spaghetti-strap camisole that flowed into a skirt with leaf-like appliqués.

She completed her look with a voluminous purple flower choker and dainty pearl earrings.

Amber wore her golden locks back and away from her face for the occasion and accentuated her features with a simple makeup palette.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to brave the forecast 3C temperature in Copenhagen to catch a glimpse of Mary Donaldson becoming Queen of Denmark.

In Australia, events are planned at the Slip Inn in Sydney, where the pair first met, and in Mary's home state of Tasmania, where landmarks will be illuminated in honor of the beloved royal.

The royal succession in Denmark is expected to be a low-key affair, with the main event taking place around 1am (AEDT) when most Australians will be asleep.

Here Frederik becomes Denmark's head of state, Maria becomes Queen and their eldest son, 18-year-old Christian, becomes Crown Prince.

King Frederik, 55, is expected to make his first public appearance on a balcony next to the Danish prime minister, who will officially name him the country's new ruler.

The royal couple will travel home to their residence at Amalienborg Palace in a black-painted 1891 mahogany horse-drawn carriage, while military personnel across the harbor will fire cannons in a three-by-27-shot salute.

There will be more celebratory explosions later when Copenhagen's famous Tivoli amusement park hosts a fireworks spectacle – the largest in its 180-year history.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said Australians were proud that the nation would have its own queen.

“Princess Mary is someone who has long captured the hearts of people around the world,” he said.
