Lima In Peru, the Public Prosecutor’s Office began investigations into President Dina Boluarte following the recent riots. She, Prime Minister Alberto Otarola, Defense Minister Jorge Chavez and Interior Minister Victor Rojas are charged with “genocide, homicide and serious injury”, prosecutors said on Tuesday. The Office of the President and the Cabinets of Ministers did not initially respond to requests for comment.

At least 17 people were killed in clashes between police and protesters on Monday – more than ever in one day during protests against the South American country’s leadership that have raged since early December. The riots continued on Tuesday. A police officer was killed in his car after it was set on fire. A total of 40 people have been killed since the protests began.

The trigger is the resignation and imprisonment of the controversial president Pedro Castillo. He is accused of trying to illegally dissolve parliament to avoid impeachment. Since then, the acting president is Boluarte. Castillo’s supporters demand new elections, the politician’s release and Boluarte’s resignation.

The new government won a confidence vote in parliament on Tuesday. It was necessary to rule.
