Lac-Mégantic – ce n’est pas une accident by Philippe Falardeau is nominated for the Best Documentary Series award, while comedy-drama Good morning Chuck (or the art of harm reduction) is in the official competition and L’air d ‘Aller stands out in the short series category.
The trailer for Lac-Mégantic was also unveiled on Tuesday – it’s no coincidence – which the public will be able to see on the Vrai platform in May.
In the last few days we have also been able to see the first images of Good morning Chuck (or the art of harm reduction) co-directed by Mathieu Cyr and Jean-François Rivard (C’est comme ça que je t’ aime, Série noire) , which will be released by Crave on May 24th. The dramatic comedy, shot in black and white, chronicles the therapy of a popular television presenter (played by Nicolas Pinson) who became embroiled in a drug-related scandal.
As for the series L’air d’aller, its broadcast began last Thursday on the airwaves of Télé-Québec. This is another dramedy that follows four young adults with cystic fibrosis. Our colleague Hugo Dumas recently praised it in a column.
Tour de France, Buffy, Rachel Weisz and Tapie on the Croisette
The Canneseries Festival presented its program rich in celebrities and series of events, in particular documentaries such as the Tour de France, Tapie or adaptations of the cult films Liaison fatale and Faux-semblants.
Main novelty: the introduction of a competitive category for documentary series, a genre popularized by video-on-demand platforms.
Six productions are up for grabs, including one about the fall of former Spanish King Juan Carlos, an investigation into the Chevaline murder and the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster in Canada.
Out of competition, the first episodes of Tour de France: At the heart of the peloton, a new sports documentary series from Netflix, and Why we fight, on the melting ice will be previewed.
Ten series compete against each other in the long format category. These include False pretenses, adapted from the film of the same name by David Cronenberg and starring Oscar winner Rachel Weisz.
She will face the biopic Tapie, which will be shown on Netflix, with Laurent Lafitte in the role of the French businessman, and Spinners, the first African series selected in Canneseries, about the world of Johannesburg gangs and “spinning”. . », Extreme Auto Rodeo.
The jury for this category will be chaired by Lior Raz, screenwriter and star actor of the Israeli series Fauda, accompanied in particular by actresses Shirine Boutella (Papicha, Lupin), Zabou Breitman and Stewart Copeland, drummer of the group The Police.
Launched in 2017 with the Canal+ group, Canneseries is a free series festival open to the public, like SeriesMania, the largest series festival in Europe, which has just ended in Lille, northern France.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, cult slayer from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Morfydd Clark, heroine from The Rings of Power, will be honored with an honorary award, while the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which ends on Amazon in May, will come around to say goodbye
The opening ceremony will be broadcast free-to-air and live on Canal+ for the first time, followed by the screening of the first episode of Silo, a new UK production on Apple TV+, in Cannes.
