Radio journalist shot dead in the Philippines

A radio journalist was shot dead at his home in the Philippines on Sunday, police said, in a country where the media is a regular target of assassinations and intimidation.

Juan Jumalon, 57, was at home on the southern island of Mindanao when he was shot by a gunman, according to Deore Ragonio, police chief of Calamba in Misamis province. west (northwest of the island).

According to a police press release, the suspect entered the room where he had set up his radio studio, saying he wanted to make an on-air announcement.

He then fled and Mr Jumalon was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

“He mainly reported on current events and was not known to criticize anyone in his broadcasts,” Ragonio told AFP.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (UNJP) condemned an “infamous murder.”

The Philippines is among the most dangerous countries for journalists, where perpetrators of such abuses are rarely prosecuted.

In May, radio journalist Cresenciano Bunduquin was shot dead outside his home in the center of the archipelago.
