Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) on Monday called for an “independent investigation” into the Gaza hospital bombing and continued to refuse to accept U.S. and Israeli findings that Islamic Jihad terrorists were behind the atrocity .

“Media and outside analysts have cast doubt on the claims and evidence presented by both Israel and the Gaza Strip Ministry of Health, and I agree with the United Nations that an independent investigation is necessary,” Tlaib said in a statement .

“I cannot uncritically accept Israel’s denial of responsibility as fact, especially in light of the World Health Organization’s confirmation that Israel has bombed numerous medical facilities in Gaza and reports from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society of continued threats by the Israeli military to evacuate hospitals. ” She said.

Hamas claimed last week that an Israeli airstrike killed about 500 people at Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City – sparking unrest across the Middle East and forcing President Biden to cancel a planned summit with Arab leaders in to cancel Jordan.

But both the White House and the Israeli government have determined that the explosion was caused by a misfired Islamic Jihad rocket from the Palestinian side of the border.

Islamic Jihad is a smaller, more radical Palestinian terrorist group that often works with Hamas.

“Both the governments of Israel and the United States have a long, documented history of misleading the public about wars and war crimes – such as the Israeli military’s assassination of Shireen Abu Akleh last year and the false claims about weapons of mass destruction ravaging our country led the war in Iraq” – and cannot absolve themselves of responsibility without an independent international investigation,” Tlaib added. “This debate should not distract us from the urgent need for a ceasefire to save innocent civilian lives.”

The Israeli government has released wiretapped telephone calls from Gaza and other evidence that it says shows its military was not behind the bombing.

Israeli officials also said several dozen people lost their lives in the explosion, instead of the approximately 500 that Hamas reported.

“I don’t know all the details, but I know that the people in the Department of Defense that I respect and the intelligence community that I respect say that it is highly unlikely that Israel did this,” Biden, 80, said last week to reporters.

The New York Times, which initially blamed the bombing on Israel by citing Hamas, retracted its reporting on Monday, admitting that it had relied “too heavily” on information from the terror group.

Investigations by the Wall Street Journal, CNN and the Associated Press have also found evidence that the rocket came from the terrorist organization – and not Israel – based on television footage that purported to show a misfired Palestinian rocket in the air above the hospital rails.

In the immediate aftermath of the bombing, Tlaib raged, tweeting, “Israel just bombed the Baptist Hospital and killed 500 Palestinians (doctors, children, patients) just like that.” [Biden] This is what happens when you refuse to facilitate a ceasefire and contribute to de-escalation. Their approach to war and destruction was eye-opening for me and many Palestinian Americans and Muslim Americans like me. We will remember where you stood.”

Then, at a pro-Palestinian rally outside the U.S. Capitol, the Michigan Democrat doubled down on the Hamas narrative.

“People think it’s OK to bomb a hospital with children,” Tlaib, a member of the far-left “Squad” of congressional Democrats, told the crowd last Wednesday.
