Paola Deffendi, Giulio Regeni’s mother, was a guest on Propaganda Live on La7 with her husband Claudio Regeni and appealed to the Italian state over the death of her son in Egypt: “For nine nights and nine days Julius was tortured and deliberately killed. We must say things as they are, Giulio was tortured and killed. And from here begins our existence as wandering parents in search of truth and justice. It’s not easy, also because we’ve had to demand truth and justice for a good seven years. Now we understand part of the truth and we want a trial, we want a trial to start in Italy.”

The parents therefore continue to demand justice for their son, while the trial is not celebrated because of the impossibility of transmitting the documents to the Egyptian defendants: “We have evidence – says Claudio Regeni in an interview with Diego Bianchi – that the four defendants know that they are in court, but they are fleeing voluntarily, they cannot be found to be able to issue the domicile decision that would allow the proceedings to be initiated”. “We keep hearing – Giulio’s mother repeated the word -, that Egypt wants to work together, that it is willing to remove the obstacles, we wondered what obstacles, the ones that make sure we don’t have those four addresses that then lead to the choice of residence, or that sometimes we do We also wondered why the new Meloni government didn’t come to ask our lawyer what the situation was like before they nac h Cairo goes.

Claudio Regeni wanted to underline that thanks to the Cartabia reform, the choice of residence in Italy is now possible for the 4 officials of the Roman prosecutor responsible for the doctoral student’s death: “As citizens, we expect the trial to begin – they say – it’s not about the family. Since last November 7th, when Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni went to Cop27, we’ve been hearing that Egypt wants to work together to remove obstacles. We’ve wondered what obstacles he’s trying to remove, and sometimes we’ve wondered if the obstacle is us. The new Egyptian ambassador has been in Rome for weeks and we sent him a meeting request but he didn’t have a chance to reply, at least out of courtesy. In these 7 years, we Italians have changed 6 governments and each government has positioned itself or not effectively in relation to the actions to be taken by the COP 27. We are super friends of Egypt now. The government should insist on this domicile choice, which would allow the process to begin. The picture is complex and we do not know what kind of cooperation President Al Sisi has promised our politicians. Our passport, Giulio Regeni’s parents conclude, takes us to many countries, but not necessarily home.”
