Regional unity reaches agreement on the start of the ceasefire in Sudan

Djiboutian Minister of Economy and Finance in charge of Industry Ilyas M. Dawaleh highlighted the announcement on his social network account, which was held the day before to address the ongoing crisis in this neighboring country.

For his part, the Executive Secretary of the African Regional Unit, Workneh Gebeyehu, stated on the same digital platform that “the Assembly has effectively fulfilled the commitment of the Sudanese warring parties to quickly declare and agree on a cessation of hostilities, a crucial step to be taken “The aspirations of the Sudanese people!”

Gebeyehu appreciated the organization of the meeting by Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh, who appreciated the constructive discussions and guidance on how to address the conflict in Khartoum.

The peaceful resolution of the crisis and the search for harmony and stability for the Sudanese people were once again the focus of the meeting between the leaders of Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea and the host country.

The excessive death toll, population displacement and destruction of socio-economic development infrastructure require immediate action as there is a risk of ultimate collapse and the country becoming a source of instability for the entire region.

According to the newspaper La Nation, the work of the conclave was characterized, among other things, by the analysis of the basic situations that make it difficult for the protagonists of the Sudan crisis to comply with successive peace initiatives at different levels.

At the regional level, IGAD, at the continental level the African Union and at the multilateral level in particular the Jeddah Platform jointly organized by Saudi Arabia and the United States with the support of the regional entity were part of this effort.

Clashes in Sudan erupted on April 15 due to contradictions amid an integration process of the RFS (Rapid Support Forces) into the armed forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, vice-president of the Sovereign Transitional Council (CST). and the head of the army and president of the CST, Abdel Fattah al Burhan.

Both with the rank of general, they disputed control of the country after the overthrow of President Omar al Bashir in 2019.
